At last the front suspension on Stephen's car is sorted. In brief, a kerb was
struck with some force during the icy weather in January, leaving the passenger
side front wheel with an alarming amount of positive camber (sticking out at
the top). No obvious damage was visible to the subframe or suspension
wishbones, and adding /removing shims, changing various parts made no
difference. The car handled like it was on casters.
Some fresh thinking from Alan Quinn, combined with careful measuring,
showed that the nearside wheel was nearly an inch further forward than the
other side, and it was also the width of a finger nearer the edge of the wheel
arch as well. This pointed to a displaced subframe, further probing discovered
severe rot in the chassis leg to which the subframe is attached. At this point
, I began to wonder was the body twisted as well! However, having consulted the
entire first series of Mc Gyver, I decided to try and sort it. First task was
to try to pull the subframe back into line. This was attempted using a
scaffolding pole wedged behind a brick wall and a stout rope tied at one end to
